Personal & Professional Action Plan
Moving forward, I intend to focus on three main areas (i) utilizing the lens of research to assess the impact of specific strategies on teaching and learning, (ii) utilizing new technology tools to support teaching and learning and, (iii) utilizing the lens of peer reflection to improve my practice, (Table 1). Firstly, I hope to start by assessing the impact of the BOPPPS Lesson Plan on teaching and learning in the undergraduate courses that I teach. Already, this is a practice that I have embedded in 3 undergraduate courses (ESST 2005-Level 2, ESST 3102-Level 3, BIOL 3466-Level 3) in Semester 2 of the 2022/2023 academic year. I am hoping that I can receive some guidance about designing a questionnaire that I can utilize to assess the impact of this strategy on student learning. Already, I have received informal student feedback that suggests that the impact is positive. However, I believe that quantitative data is needed. Furthermore, in the 2023/2024 academic year, I specifically intend to utilize a new software called ‘SeaSketch’ in an undergraduate course, such that students will be introduced to the emerging concept of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). Using a simulated case study, students will through a process of active inquiry and engage in MSP for a coastal state. I also intend to explore the use of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AVR) to support student learning. Funding challenges presently imposes barriers on the number of field trips that are allowed per course. As such, I am hoping that if there is a way to capture imagery in the field and package it using AVR that it can support teaching and learning. Finally, I intend to identify at least one of two of my fellow academic teaching staff colleagues who are interested in improving their teaching practice by utilizing the lens of peer reflection. During intermittent meetings throughout the year, we can engage in peer reflection and utilize the feedback provided to collectively improve our practice.
